Today we’re celebrating Intersex Awareness Day!
Intersex individuals make up about 1.7% of the population, meaning intersex variations are as common as red hair! Yet, due to stigma and lack of awareness, intersex people remain largely invisible.
It’s essential to understand that intersex variations aren’t a condition that needs "treatment." Intersex people are born with physical traits that don’t fully align with typical definitions of male or female bodies, which is a natural part of human diversity.
This day reminds us of the importance of advocating for intersex rights and against unnecessary medical interventions. At the Tuzla Open Center, we support every individual's right to be themselves without pressure to conform to societal norms.
This activity is supported by the Core Grant of the regional SMART Balkan project – Civil Society for a Connected Western Balkans, implemented by the Center for Civil Society Promotion (CPCD) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Center for Research and Policy Making (CRPM) in North Macedonia, and the Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM) in Albania, with financial support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
